OUR INSPIRATION

Tom is visiting a dermatologist for the first time. The doctor asks Tom, “What medications are you taking?” This is not a simple question, and he has trouble recalling all the information: medication names, doses, how often he takes, and on and on and on. Oh, the most important question: “Who is the prescribing physician for each?” Tom is not even entirely sure why he has been prescribed some of them!

Tom is not alone. Most consumers find it difficult to answer basic yet important questions about their health. “When was your last tetanus shot?” “What is your total cholesterol?” “When did you have it checked?” “When was your last mammogram?” “What did it show?”

Most people take little personal ownership of their health information. Tom is not to blame. He relies on his doctors to keep good records. “My new doctor will get my chart from my old doctor”, he thinks. He has it all figured out. But the fact is that this doesn’t always work. Unless you are dealing with a very major illness, most doctors don’t request records for routine exams and proceed to make diagnosis unaware of the patient’s accurate health history.

Tom’s friend Bob, on the other hand, has a slightly different version of the same story. He is part of a growing population with access to their “Patient-Centered” Health records. Even before he would show up to his doctor’s appointment, Bob would fill out all the necessary paperwork online and send it along with his updated health records. Bob is an engaged patient that does his research, expects his time to be valued, and looks for simple, convenient tools to manage his busy lifestyle. Engaged patients stay informed, are comfortable discussing health issues, asking questions, and challenging their doctor when necessary.

OVERVIEW

The healthcare information technology landscape is changing quickly to meet the demands of the industry. The market is flooded by electronic health records software solutions, (EHR) that are designed for niche markets and are typically custom, low volume, proprietary, and under-supported. They handle basic patient demographics, clinical data, insurance billing, and collections. While better than paper, they have one glaring problem — today’s EHRs can’t and don’t communicate with each other. They simply are not designed to properly create the beneficial secure interactions between doctors and their patients.

Doctor-patient interaction outside of the office is often minimal, impersonal, and inadequate. Patients lack the tools to collect, track, and share important, up-to-date information about their health or the health of someone in their care. Our solution makes it possible for a doctor to take, say a laboratory report, and put it in a HIPAA-compliant “binder” from which another authorized doctor at a separate facility can access. Similarly, the ability to share that report with the patient will help to engage them directly in the ongoing management of their care.

Data privacy and security is a key requirement for every healthcare professional. HIPAA requires all physicians to train their staff in patient privacy issues and establish policies for handling protected electronic patient records. Solo and small physician groups that might have assumed they were exempt from government data-security regulations received a rude awakening in 2012, when a five-physician Phoenix-based cardiac practice was fined $100,000 for failing to comply with the privacy provisions of HIPAA. With the Department of Health and Human Services gearing up for a major audit of HIPAA compliance in 2016, it's crucial for healthcare professionals who may have overlooked the latest HIPAA rules to do a tune-up and an overhaul of their practices.
